Welcome

At Shady Oaks, we meet young people where they are. With individualised, evidence-based therapy for a range of mental health presentations, young people are supported to build their confidence and ability to regulate emotions, advocate for their needs, build their social skills, and more. Shady Oaks provides a neurodiversity-affirming lens to therapy and recommendations so that support is practical and meaningful.

Meet Katie

I am passionate about supporting young people to claim their place in the world by:

  • helping them recognise and apply their strengths to overcome real and perceived barriers

  • guiding their support teams (parents, teachers, mentors) to understand mental health and neurodiversity

  • empowering young people and their supports to advocate for the young person’s wellbeing across settings.

Hi I’m Katie Glynn, an Educational and Developmental psychologist.

I have many years of experience working with children, adolescents, and their parents in schools, private practice, and early intervention government health services. I strive to partner with schools to support students with additional needs in ways which work for each young person.

My experience includes supporting young people and their families with a range of neurodivergent presentations, including demand avoidance, challenges at school, sensory sensitivity, language delays, and selective mutism. I work with a range of presentations, including anxiety, depression, and trauma.

With my Educational and Developmental background, I assess and report in areas of cognition (giftedness, intellectual disability), achievement, adaptive functioning, attention (ADHD), and behaviour.

I also assess and diagnose Specific Learning Disorders, more commonly known as dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia.

Professionally speaking, I was fortunate to complete the Master of Psychology (Educational & Developmental) at Queensland University of Technology, which is where I found my passion for working with youth and families from all walks of life.

In my free time I can be found doing yoga, playing outside in nature with my family and dogs, or baking some sweet treats.

Whether you notice your child is reluctant to talk about their feelings, struggling at school, needs help to manage big emotions, or would like to improve any other area of their life, Shady Oaks is here to help.

WHO WE WORK WITH

Children and adolescents from ages 6 and up are welcome for individual therapy or assessment services. Presentations which Shady Oaks supports include anxiety and mood disorders, trauma, developmental delay, social skills, executive function, demand avoidance, and challenges at school, including learning difficulties. Parents are invited to participate in the therapeutic process with parent sessions and end-of-session summaries.

Assessments for learning difficulties, giftedness, developmental delays, behaviour, and attention (including ADHD) are available for children ages 6-17. Feedback and consultation can be provided to schools to help staff understand and implement recommended supports to help your child thrive.

We know it can feel overwhelming to see a psychologist, so if you have any questions or would like to have a chat, please reach out.

Our Services

Shady Oaks offers individual child and adolescent therapy sessions (ages 6+), assessment (ages 6-17), and parenting support (ages 2+). Services are available in-person or via telehealth. NDIS, Medicare, and privately paying clients are all accepted. Speak with your private insurance to see whether they offer rebates for psychology services.

Individual therapy

A 50-minute session working towards the young person’s and family’s goals. A range of therapeutic approaches and activities are used depending on the needs and interests of the young person. Young people always have input into how the session is run so that they feel comfortable and regulated. Fees are $270 per session.

Psychological assessment

The assessment process includes a 50-minute intake session for parents to share their child’s developmental history, identify concerns, and note what is and is not currently working. We will discuss which assessment is the best fit to find answers to your questions.

Assessment sessions (2-2.5hrs each) involve the administration of formal psychological tests. Parents are rarely in the room, and children and adolescents are encouraged to come in well-rested and fed, and to just try their best.

Any questionnaires involved in the assessment process will be emailed to families and teachers (or whoever is completing the form). These can be completed and returned electronically.

All results are scored, interpreted, and reported on out of session time. This time is included in the overall assessment fee.

All assessments will have a 50-minute feedback session in which we will discuss results, review the report, and families can ask any questions. Families will be provided with a full report which includes support recommendations tailored to the young person’s strengths and needs.

Assessment areas include:

  • Cognitive ability $1,890

  • Intellectual Disability $2,025 (including adaptive functioning questionnaire)

  • Achievement $2,025 (Academic achievement)

  • Specific Learning Disorders or comprehensive assessment $2,835 (dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia)

  • Adaptive functioning $1,080

  • Attention, ADHD, or Behaviour $1,080

Based on the initial session, assessments or questionnaires can be added on.

Broader teams support

Parents can also book sessions, whether that be for parenting support to understand child and adolescent development and behaviour, increase connection skills to improve relationships with your young person, or to learn how to advocate for your child and their needs across environments. You will have 50-minute sessions to share questions and concerns, reflect, and practice new skills in a supported therapeutic environment before trying them out in the home.

Families can also request support at school meetings or other liaison with school staff to help staff best understand your child’s needs.

We’d love to stay in touch

We share quarterly newsletters with parenting tips, timely support recommendations (such as decompressing in the school holidays, transitioning to a new school year), and clinic updates. Let us know if you’d like to hear from us.

If you would like to chat about what you are looking for in a psychologist, have any questions, or would like to book in that first appointment, please get in touch! Please fill in the form below and someone will be in contact with you within 1 business day.
